Celebrating Young Talent and Creativity Across Lagos
The 2025 Community Arts & Design Festival, organized by Better You Africa Initiative (BYAI), was a resounding success, a day filled with color, music, performance, and inspiration. Originally planned for twelve schools, the festival saw participation from eight secondary schools across Lagos State. Students showcased their creativity in visual arts, fashion design, spoken word, drama, dance, music, sports, and crafts, embodying the theme of expression, innovation, and community pride.
Our goal goes beyond education, we exist to help young people discover who they are and what they can become. In Nigeria, we know many adults end up working outside their field of study. This is why we’re passionate about helping students identify and grow what they’re naturally good at, their talents, skills, and creative strengths.
Our teachers are already doing an incredible job teaching English, Mathematics, and Science. What we’re doing is building on that, inspiring students to express themselves, find joy in learning, and see that their passion can become a profession. We’re not just celebrating art, we’re celebrating innovation, performance, sports, design, and technology. We’re creating a movement that connects creativity with opportunity, and talent with training. Our vision is to build a pipeline where these young talents can access mentorship, internships, exhibitions, and skill-building programs.
The enthusiasm was overwhelming, teachers, students, and local stakeholders came together to celebrate the power of creativity in education. We received support from Ikeja, Kosofe, and Agege Local Governments, with Agege LGA hosting the event at its multipurpose hall and contributing financial support. The LGA also rewarded students by buying most of their outstanding arts and crafts..
Distinguished guests included The Acting Executive Chairman of Agege LGA Hon Abdulganiyu Obasa and his management team, representatives from the Ministry of Education, the ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, as well as officials from participating education districts, partners, and volunteers.
More than just a competition, the festival created a platform for recognition, mentorship, and skill development , helping students see the possibilities beyond academics.
It reaffirmed our belief that every child deserves a chance to explore, express, and excel.
We look forward to expanding this initiative across more schools next year, creating even more opportunities for students to turn their passions into pathways.
