Transforming Shogunle Primary School by Better You Africa Initiave

In 2021, Better You Africa Initiative took on a mission to revitalize Shogunle Primary School, where one block of five classrooms had fallen into serious disrepair. The classrooms were plagued by leaky roofs, missing windows, and worn-out ceilings, making it difficult for students to focus on learning in a safe, comfortable space. Recognizing the urgency of these conditions, we set out to restore and improve the learning environment for the students, fostering a place where they could feel inspired and motivated.

Project Activities Our team conducted extensive renovations on the five-classroom block, transforming it into a safe and vibrant learning area. Key activities included: • Roof and Ceiling Repairs: We replaced leaking roofing sheets and damaged ceiling boards, ensuring the classrooms were weatherproof and comfortable. • Window Replacements: Missing windows were replaced to enhance ventilation and security in the classrooms. • Creative Painting and Decor: Outside the corridor, we added vibrant artwork and motivational messages, such as “We Love Learning” and “Our Teachers Are the Best.” Inside the classrooms, the walls were adorned with creative, knowledge-themed paintings, making the space both engaging and educational.

Upon completion, we hosted a memorable handover ceremony to officially present the renovated block of classrooms to the school. This event was well-attended by various dignitaries, including: • Representatives from Local Government and the Education Board: Officials from different government parastatals, including representatives of the local government chairman and the education board, gave speeches commending the project’s impact and significance. • Security and Support: The Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch Corps provided security, ensuring a safe and orderly event. The ceremony also featured: • Student Performances: The children showcased their talents with songs, spoken word, and short plays, expressing their excitement and gratitude for the newly renovated classrooms. • Guest Speakers: Professionals spoke to the students on topics such as mental health, arts, and personal development, inspiring them to pursue their dreams. • Parental Appreciation: Parents expressed their heartfelt gratitude, recognizing the project’s positive impact on their children’s educational experience.

Impact and Outcomes
Since the project’s completion, Shogunle Primary School has reported notable improvements: • Increased Student Engagement: The vibrant new environment has inspired students to participate more actively in their studies and school activities. • Enhanced Learning Atmosphere: The improved classrooms provide a comfortable, engaging space that motivates students and enhances focus. • Community Pride and Ownership: The project has fostered a sense of pride among students, teachers, and parents, strengthening the school community.
